Therapy for Sex Addiction or Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior (OCSB)

Our Approach at a Glance

We believe that sexual behavior, even when it feels out of control, is a natural part of being human. Our approach is rooted in the Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior (OCSB) model developed by Doug Braun-Harvey; we emphasize sexual health, personal integrity, and consensual, ethical sexual behavior. Our focus is on understanding, managing, and cultivating healthy sexuality rather than imposing shame or demanding strict abstinence.

Struggling with Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior?

Our clients often seek help with behaviors they find difficult to control, such as excessive pornography use, compulsive sexual encounters, or risky sexual behaviors. We help clients regulate, modify, or understand their sexual behavior using a sex-positive, anti-shame, intimacy-centered philosophy.

Six Principles of Sexual Health (Doug Braun-Harvey)

Our approach is guided by Doug Braun-Harvey's Six Principles of Sexual Health, which are:

  • Consent: All sexual activity must be consensual, respecting the autonomy of all parties involved.

  • Non-Exploitation: Sexual interactions should be free from coercion, manipulation, or abuse of power.

  • Protection from HIV and Other STIs: Clients are supported in making informed, safe choices regarding their sexual health.

  • Honesty: Open, transparent communication is essential in all sexual interactions.

  • Shared Values: Clients are encouraged to explore and align their sexual behavior with their personal values.

  • Pleasure: Sexual experiences should be satisfying and pleasurable, contributing to overall well-being.

Understanding Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior (OCSB)

Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior (OCSB) is not a moral failure, a chemical addiction, or a sign of being inherently flawed. Instead, it is a pattern of behavior that may feel distressing or unmanageable. Our goal is to help clients understand and change these behaviors without shame or stigma.

Our Approach to Treatment

  • Sexual Health Framework: We use the Six Principles of Sexual Health as a foundation for exploring and transforming sexual behavior.

  • Fantasies as Insight: We encourage honest exploration of fantasies, understanding them as valuable insights into desires and needs.

  • Compassion and Non-Judgment: We provide a safe space where clients can discuss their experiences without fear of blame or shame.

  • Harm Reduction, Not Abstinence: We help clients develop healthier behaviors without insisting on abstinence.

  • Building Sexual Competence: Our focus is on empowering clients to engage in consensual, satisfying, and ethical sexual experiences.

Why We Use the OCSB Model

The OCSB model is a compassionate, evidence-based approach grounded in the belief that sexual behavior can be a positive and meaningful part of life. It emphasizes self-awareness, ethical behavior, and sexual health rather than shaming or pathologizing clients.

Addressing Fantasies

We recognize that fantasies are a natural part of sexuality, but they can become problematic when they lead to distress, shame, or compulsive behavior. Our approach helps clients:

  • Understand the origins and meaning of their fantasies.

  • Explore how fantasies align with their values.

  • Develop healthier, more fulfilling ways to experience and express desire.

Rejecting Shame

We do not advocate for abstinence unless that aligns with your goals. Abstinence can lead to shame, guilt, and repression. Our focus is on helping you cultivate a healthy, consensual, and satisfying sexual life.

We offer both individual and group therapy options, recognizing that each client’s journey is unique. Group therapy can offer connection and shared experience, while individual therapy provides privacy and personalized support.

Ready to Explore Your Sexual Health?

If you are struggling with Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior, you do not have to go through it alone. Our compassionate, skilled therapists are here to help you build a healthier, more satisfying sexual life. We offer both individual and group therapy options, recognizing that each client’s journey is unique. Group therapy can offer connection and shared experience, while individual therapy provides privacy and personalized support.
